Hatch operates two cannabis dispensaries in Addison and Wheeling, Illinois. Competing in a market where price is the easiest lever and the hardest one to sustain, Hatch wanted to grow sales and deepen loyalty without giving away margin. challenge

Grow sales without giving away margin

Discounts and promotions can move product in the short term, but they train shoppers to wait for the next deal and they cut directly into margin. The challenge for Hatch was to grow order value, bring shoppers back sooner, and build loyalty, without discounting to get there. The right solution also had to be practical: no added cost to the retailer, no extra work for budtenders, and no risk to its bottom line.

Solution

Brand-funded cash-back rewards with Jane Gold

Hatch was running on Ecommerce Standard. They added Jane Gold, the cash-back rewards program funded by brands, so shoppers started earning real cash back on the products they were buying anyway, and they responded by placing bigger orders and coming back more often. Because Jane Gold runs inside the menu Hatch already used, there was nothing new for the team to manage.

Our most valuable shoppers are now spending over $30 more each trip because of the cash back they earn, and it costs us nothing as the retailer. Gold has also driven more shoppers to ACH payments, where our average cart runs 20 to 25% higher. It is a win-win for us with zero risk.

The difference

The growth cost Hatch nothing

Every dollar of cash back came from the brands, not from Hatch's margin. The growth came from what shoppers chose to spend on their own.

Methodology

Figures reflect Hatch performance over a trailing period of time. Average order value compares Gold-enrolled shoppers with non-Gold shoppers. Incremental sales measure the additional revenue attributable to Jane Gold above expected baseline, expressed as a percentage of total sales. Relative lifts are calculated as the gap between the two groups divided by the lower value (for example, the 38% average order value lift is the $35.21 difference divided by the $91.77 non-Gold average). Payment figures compare average ACH cart size with average cash and debit cart size. Program-wide Gold vs non-Gold figures reflect aggregated Jane Gold performance. All rewards are funded by participating brands at no cost to the retailer.
